Red River House Winnipeg, Manitoba Design 2006/2007 Construction 2008 The approach, down a Winnipeg North End street, is dominated by the wedge shape structure punctuated from within by a beaming projection screen. It’s a grand placement for the Red River House - squarely in the middle of Winnipeg’s history, sitting on a Red River lot anchored on one end of the facing street by a settler’s home circa 1851 and a block from the site of the Battle of Seven Oaks. The design is ambitious yet modest, taking its shape from a boat by widening in the middle narrowing towards a stern and bow. It evokes the history of the area with references to the multiple waves of immigrants while achieving the urban cabin feel the owners wanted. The structure |
