History of silk-painting

Silk tapestries is the art form of weaving silk textiles producing pictures and images. This process was the major means of reproduction of master pieces prior to photography. Silk tapestries have remained popular because of their three dimensional characteristics and intricate weaving. They are truly timeless works of art. The history of the art is going back in time of Asia mostly into China. The "Six principles of Chinese painting" were established by Xie He a writer, art historian and critic in 5th century China. He is most famous for his "Six points to consider when judging a painting" , taken from the preface to his book "The Record of the Classification of Old Painters" Keep in mind that this was written circa 550 A.D. and refers to "old" and "ancient" practices.
The six elements that define a painting are:
  • Spirit Resonance", or vitality, and seems to translate to the nervous energy transmitted from the artist into the work. The overall energy of a work of art. Xie He said that without Spirit Resonance, there was no need to look further.
  • "Bone Method", or the way of using the brush. This refers not only to texture and brush stroke, but to the close link between handwriting and personality. In his day, the art of calligraphy was inseparable from painting.
  • "Correspondence to the Object", or the depicting of form, which would include shape and line.
  • "Suitability to Type", or the application of color, including layers, value and tone.
  • "Division and Planning", or placing and arrangement, corresponding to composition, space and depth.
  • "Transmission by Copying", or the copying of models, not only from life but also the works of antiquity.
  • The other big inventor and user of silk art was Japan. The technique and design are different to the Chinese art. The Six Japanese ladies in traditional kimonos are exquisitely captured in the Japanese painting style. Japanese women have traditionally worn kimonos since circa 800 AD. Today, elaborate kimonos can cost more than tens thousand dollars and are usually worn for special occasions like marriage ceremonies. This beautiful silk painting is ideal for evoking feelings of the Orient anywhere it is set. Japanese silk painting is hand-painted on silk-covered paper featuring an attractive Japanese motif. The paper is glued onto the four lacquered wood frames that make up the painting. A matted silk brocade border is crafted into every painting for a beautiful look. These artistic paintings can be used as a privacy screen or as an upright art piece (partly folded on a floor or table). Additionally, they may be easily mounted to any wall for attractive Asian-inspired decor. After a long period of development of techniques and styles, silk painting reached its highest period of success during the years 1925-1945 . The Asian style of silk painting emphasized softness, elegance and a flexibility of style. These qualities of silk painting were different compared to, at the time, to the dominant French and European oil painting. Silk painting is now popular in Vietnam also and has its own unique character and transparency of colors that are different from those of ancient China and Japan.

    The science side of painting:

Neuroscience shows that creativity is universal in that all healthy human brains are creative. A creative predisposition is wired in at birth and every child intuitively wants to express it. But when a child’s creativity is not encouraged it may be lost forever. E. Paul Torrance has documented a “4th-grade slump” across cultures in the creative and imaginative lives of children. When children begin school, their level of creativity is evident and often flourishing, but by the time they reach 4th grade, they are more conforming, less likely to take risks, and less playful or spontaneous than in earlier years. This decline in creativity continues throughout the school years and into adulthood. The art also used in therapeutic ways through different organizations around the world helping adults and children.
